S — Stop

Stop what you are doing for a moment. Do not send the message, make the purchase, use the substance, or act on the first impulse. Let the pause interrupt the automatic reaction.

T — Take a step back

Create a little space from the trigger. Put down the phone, step outside, take a few breaths, or move away from the conversation or situation if you can. The goal is not to run away forever—it is to give yourself room to choose.

O — Observe

Notice what is happening inside and around you. What happened? What are you feeling? What thoughts are moving quickly? What does your body want to do? Observing is not agreeing with the feeling; it is gathering information before you respond.

P — Proceed mindfully

Choose the safest useful next step based on what you observed. You might slow your breathing, use TIPP or grounding, contact support, leave the situation, or wait before responding. You only need to decide the next step, not solve everything at once.
